Hello friends, and welcome to the first song
reviewed on Kyle’s All-New Radio Dial!
So without further ado, let’s kick it off with Philadelphia’s
own Dr. Dog and “Listening In”!
Released
on the band’s 2018 album Critical
Equation, Dr. Dog’s track is a trippy blend of indie rock and psychedelia
which somehow manages to be both unsettling and comforting all at once.
Listen to it while relaxing… it’ll make your mind go all melty. In a good way, of course.
Lyrically, the song details a man overcome with heartbreak due to a romantic
loss, and his unusual claims that he can overhear conversations held between things
that don’t, and shouldn’t ever, speak. Yet he soon comes to learn that
his own internal doubts and fears are worse than anything that he may hear (or
thinks he hears) from any outside source. Is this poor fellow going insane, or is he somehow rising to
a higher plane of existence, one in which he can hear the sonic vibrations of
everything around him? Deep.
Classic
rock fans will enjoy hearing echoes of Tom Petty and The Beatles here, and the
bridge portion rings very true to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album closer Eclipse.
Yes I
know, some of you may be thinking that 2018 isn’t new, (it’s SO last year), but
as of a few weeks ago, the song was new to ME, and it’s certainly new when
compared to the ‘80s and ‘90s jams that typically populate the Radio Dial.
Dr. Dog
is celebrating 20 years together currently, with Critical Equation being their tenth album. I may just have to
dabble in their back catalog based solely on the strength of this track! Check out the link below the video to go to Dr. Dog's official site, where you can purchase or stream their music.
“I can hear the dead of night… talking. But
it ain’t talking to me… is it talking to you? No, it ain’t talking to me… who
is it talking to?”
